Taylor Phelps Honored with Bronze Cross For Achievement

The Legion of Valor of the United States has selected Taylor Phelps, 18th commander of North Salem High School's JROTC Viking Battalion, to receive its Bronze Cross for Achievement. Taylor is the eighth North Salem cadet to receive this honor since 2000.

The Legion presents the award annually to cadets who demonstrate a combination of:

  • outstanding scholarship;
  •  superior leadership in ROTC, the school and community;
  • and exceptional citizenship and character.

Taylor is in her fourth year of Junior ROTC. She is a member of North's Precision Air Rifle team and finished in third place at the Army JROTC National Air Rifle Championships last February. She plans to attend college after graduation.

Financial Services Staff Recognized

Director of Financial Services Susan Dodd, and her staff, Willie Earl, Sue Kirsch, Paul McHugh, Cary Pinto, Diane O’Brien, Katie O’Kelley, Donna Caldwell, Cathy Komes and Terri Unck received a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for the comprehensive annual financial report, from the Governmental Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada.

The certificate is the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting. The attainment of the award represents a significant accomplishment by a government agency and its management.

Financial Services has received this award each year since 1981.

Transportation Department Staff Recognized for Leadership

The Oregon Pupil Transportation Association honored Transportation Director Michael Shields and Administrative Assistant II Teresa Derochowski at its annual banquet  during its state conference in June.

Michael received the Ron Bryan Annual Award also known as the President’s Award. He is recognized as a leader in the pupil transportation industry and has presented at numerous chapter, state and national conferences. He currently serves on the National Association for Pupil Transportation’s task force for developing key performance indicators for transportation departments. Michael has also been a positive mentor and colleague to other school district transportation directors.

Teresa was a co-recipient of the Doug Flatt Administrative Support Award. Teresa provides direct administrative support to Michael and is Transportation department’s clerical team supervisor. She provides support to other departments and schools for customer service, billing, meeting arrangements, and multiple large scale projects.

These awards recognize individuals for their leadership abilities, safety, integrity, attitude, cooperation, contributions and commitment to student transportation.

Michael and Teresa epitomize the character these awards represent.
