Community Open Houses at new schools on August 27, 2012

Submitted by Karma Krause on August 10, 2012 - 2:38pm

The community is invited to attend open house events and tour the two new elementary schools opening in Salem. Construction of the new schools is funded through the 2008 bond measure passed by voters to relieve overcrowding and repair schools in our district.

Monday, August 27, 2012

  • Battle Creek Elementary School – ribbon cutting ceremony at 10:30 a.m., followed by student-led tours for about one hour. The building will remain open for self-guided tours until 12:30 p.m.
  • Chávez Elementary School – ribbon cutting ceremony at 12:00 p.m., followed by student-led tours for about one hour. The building will remain open for self-guided tours until 2 p.m.

The ribbon cuttings will be held outside the school entrances, so attendees should plan for the weather and for standing on pavement (seating is not available).

Please allow additional time to park at off-site parking and ride bus shuttles to the schools.

Parking for the Battle Creek event will be available at Walmart, 5250 Commercial Street SE. Park in the North section of the lot between Walmart and the furniture store. Two shuttles will run about every 15 minutes, with the first shuttle to Battle Creek departing Walmart at 9:45 a.m., and the last shuttle prior to the event departing Walmart at 10:15 a.m.

Parking for the Chávez event will be available at McKay High School. Park in the North section of the lot marked for LPC parking. Two shuttles will run about every 15 minutes, with the first shuttle to Chávez departing McKay at 11:15 a.m., and the last shuttle prior to the event departing McKay at 11:45 a.m.

Following the ribbon cutting ceremonies, shuttles will run back to offsite parking areas approximately every 15 minutes.

The completion of the two new schools marks the end of construction planned under the 2008 bond measure. When the schools open, all projects planned under the 2008 bond program with the exception of one gym floor will have been completed on time and under budget. Thanks the community's support of the bond, schools will provide cleaner, safer, less crowded learning environments for students.
