Turnaround Achievement Award winners 2009
This year, 19 secondary students were honored for changing their lives at the 15th Annual Turnaround Achievement Awards, May 13, 2009.
The 15th Annual Turnaround Achievement Awards ceremony took place at the Keizer Civic Center on May 13, showcasing secondary students that demonstrated resilience. The event was sponsored by Town & Country Lanes, which is owned by Don and Ann Lebold.
One student from each area middle school and high school was selected for making improvements in academics, attitudes, and/or attendance. A total of 19 students received awards this year and many of their families were present as well.
Many of the students had attendance issues, poor grades, or negative attitudes, but made a choice to turn their lives around. Now the students are on track for graduation, have good attendance, significantly improved grades, and have a new attitude toward school and their education.
As each student was called up to accept their award, a teacher or administrator from their school accompanied them. Each teacher and administrator shared the story of how their student turned their life around.
“The most touching part for me was when the father of turnaround student William Komoda from Leslie spoke after his son and took the time to thank the employees of our district for all the help and support we have given his son,” said Edie Buchanan, senior secretary for Secondary Education. “It was nice for all of us to hear and made me tear up.”
