Middle schoolers ponder possible careers
On May 22nd, FBI Special Agent Dan McLaughlin entered Waldo Middle School with one mission: inspire students to pursue their dreams. Local professionals from the community shared their experiences with students at both Waldo and Parrish Middle Schools as part of their career fairs.
“This event provides a unique opportunity for our students to meet successful adults in Salem, and learn about professions in a school-community partnership format,” said Gary Sackley, counselor at Waldo Middle School. “The event is meant to introduce students to a variety of professions.”
Parrish Middle School invited local professionals with work experiences ranging from construction, to visual arts, to communications. A veterinarian, cosmetologist, and graphic designer were among some of the professionals that spoke with students at Waldo.
“A student said that since she was a small child, she has dreamed of becoming a vet and attending that session just confirmed her goals,” said Sackley.
Special Agent McLaughlin’s session was popular among Waldo students. He brought several pieces of FBI equipment for the students to see.
“My first job was delivering newspapers, and yet here I am in the FBI” said McLaughlin. “You can do it. Do not give up on your dreams.”
