Lee Elementary promotes reading through competition

Tags: elementary, video

In an effort to keep students reading, Lee Elementary School hosted their version of "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?", sans Jeff Foxworthy. A book comprehension competition pitted Lee’s fifth-grade students against Lee educators.

“Through our own action research we noticed that our fifth-graders tend to drop off in their recreational reading, so we decided to do something about it,” said Dana Costa, Lee library media specialist. “This is just one of our solutions.”

All of Lee’s fifth-graders, and many of Lee staff, read "Shakespeare’s Secret" by Elise Broach and took a comprehension test. The top scorers moved on to compete at a school-wide assembly on May 28. A team of four students competed against a team of four educators, answering questions about the book.

As it turns out, the educators won the friendly competition.
