Spotlight on Success | May 2009
The superintendent and her executive cabinet are pleased to recognize the following individuals for their outstanding work and contributions to our school district and community.
Community/Business Partner of the Month
We would like to recognize representatives of a large group of community partners with Roberts High School. Five representatives are pictured above, along with Salem-Keizer School Board Chairperson Steve Chambers. A complete list of the community partners follows below.

Students at Roberts High School built a Model T Speedster from the ground up with the help of these mentors, members of the NW Vintage Car and Motorcycle Museum, and several other mentors, parts contributors and financial sponsors. There was significant underwriting of this project from many donors.
The men of the club have been wonderful mentors and contributors with skills, products and tools for the build. The car is an incredible project and was fired up for the first time in March and it ran! The students have exhibited it at the Salem Car Show and at the Portland Collectors Show.
Dean Lohrman is the teacher who has spearheaded this problem-based learning project incorporating math, science, language arts as well as specific auto skills and workplace skills including collaboration, attendance, flexibility, problem solving and others.
Thank you for your ongoing support to the students of Salem-Keizer Public Schools.

24 Math Challenge – First Place

Pictured from left: Heidi Litchfield, Schirle Elementary principal; fourth-grade winner Austin Kleinman; fifth-grade winner Harrison White; Chairperson Steve Chambers; Teresa Grindy from McKay High School; and Valorie Brown from Schirle.
More than 200 – fourth- and fifth-grade students competed at the annual 24 Math Challenge held at McKay High School in April.
The first place winners of the event are both from Schirle Elementary School. Austin Kleinman captured first place in the fourth-grade category and Harrison White received first place in the fifth-grade competitions.
Students competed in a game where four numbers are given and they must find a way to add, subtract, multiply or divide the numbers to make the number 24. The game helps students practice basic math facts and problem solving skills.
Thank you, Teresa for coordinating such an exciting competition.
Congratulations Austin and Harrison!
Research and Professional Development Fellowship

Pictured from left: Chairperson Chambers with Kathy Cheval.
Kathy Cheval, an elementary Math Specialist in our Curriculum Department, has been awarded a Fellowship by the Teachers Development Group.
Teachers Development Group is a nonprofit affiliate of the Portland State University Department of Mathematics and Statistics and works with schools and districts nationwide to support the design and implementation of system-wide mathematics reform. Fundamental to the success of their work is the development of an accomplished professional staff with a profound understanding of mathematics learning, teaching, and leadership.
One of their strategies for developing such staff expertise is to offer Research and Professional Development Fellowships to selected exemplary mathematics educators. Such Fellowships are offered infrequently, and only to truly exceptional teachers.
Salem Keizer School District is fortunate to have a team of exceptional mathematics teachers in our Curriculum Department, and one of that team, Kathy Cheval, has been selected for this prestigious Award.
During this Fellowship, Kathy will bring new perspectives, knowledge, and skills to the Teachers Development Group – and their many school and district partners nationwide, and she will simultaneously gain new perspectives, knowledge, and skills to bring back to our district.
For our District this Fellowship is an acknowledgement of our efforts and leadership in mathematics education – for Kathy it is the recognition of her hard work, her dedication to students and teachers, and to the standard of excellence she sets for herself, and models in our schools.
Music Educator of the Year

Pictured from left: Karl Raschkes, district music coordinator; Chairperson Chambers; Ike Nail, Music Educator of the Year; and Ed John, West Salem High principal.
The Oregon Symphony Association in Salem named West Salem High School Band Director, Ike Nail, "Music Educator of the Year."
Ike was chosen after an Oregon Symphony Association committee visited his classroom and was immediately impressed by his approach to teaching which was evident by the students' eagerness to be in his class.
West Salem's music program will received a $1000 check as part of the recognition.
Ike began teaching in the District at Sprague High School, where he was the
co-recipient of two Grammy Awards.
Congratulations on this well deserved honor!
2009 Shannon DeLateur Award for Career Achievement
Pictured from left: Cheryl Buhl, director of Oregon CIS; Chairperson Chambers; and Cheryl Bower, Sprague High principal.
Cheryl Bower is the 2009 recipient of the Shannon DeLateur Award for Career Achievement. This award is presented by the Oregon Career Information System (CIS) Board. Cheryl Buhl, director of Oregon CIS, announced the award at a district principal's meeting on April 15, 2009.
In presenting the award, the director stated, "What has always impressed her about Cheryl's work is that it embodies her belief in empowering individuals, both students and staff. She supports her school teams by providing time and resources; then she deals with barriers they might encounter. She is the ubiquitous cheerleader, encouraging accomplishment for individuals and groups."
The CIS Board selected Cheryl Bower in recognition of her numerous contributions to the career development of Oregon youth during her career and for support of the Oregon Career Information System in that work.
While at Sprague High School, Cheryl has overseen the implementation of a restructured learning community that embeds career and educational planning as a key element.
The Shannon DeLateur Award for Career Achievement was first presented in 2003. It recognizes people whose careers have reflected a sustained commitment to improving the career decision-making and preparation of Oregonians. Prior to this presentation, the award has only been given twice.
Congratulations!
State Wrestling Coach of the Year
Pictured from left: Chairperson Chambers, Kary Hadden, Sprague head wrestling coach; and Cheryl Bower, Sprague principal.
Kary Hadden has been the Head Wrestling Coach at Sprague for 20 years!
The Central Valley Conference Wrestling Coaches choose Kary Hadden as the CVC "Coach of the Year." We should note that this is not the first time Kary has received this award, this makes 11 times now.
Kary also received the honor of being selected as the Oregon School Activities Association's, "State Wrestling Coach of the Year. " Once again, let us note that this is his third time to receive this designation.
It's humbling that these honors were awarded to Kary by his peers – what a cherished honor to be given these distinctions by your colleagues!
Under Kary, the Olympians won their 11th district championship, and equaled its best state placing of third. Sprague also had two wrestlers in the state finals for the sixth straight season.
Great job!
