About DECA (from www.oregondeca.org)
Founded in 1946, DECA is a 501(c)(3) Association of Marketing Students made up of 170,000 marketing students, 4,500 marketing teachers, and 14,000 postsecondary Delta Epsilon Chi members. The student members of DECA are smart, dedicated individuals already actively involved in preparing for successful careers in marketing, management and entrepreneurship.

DECA members are experienced in workplace skills and are proven leaders within their peer groups and their neighborhood communities. The majority—generally juniors and seniors in high school—hold jobs, and a surprising percentage own their own businesses. Eighty-six percent of DECA members will pursue postsecondary education.

DECA is not extracurricular; it is an integral part of the classroom instructional program. DECA provides teachers and members with educational and leadership development activities to merge with the classroom instructional program, teaching the skills that a successful career in business requires. Working hand-in-hand with the educational and business communities, DECA’s goal is for its members to develop a “career success kit” to carry into their professional and personal lives after graduation.

Weddle Elementary held a penny drive all last week to help the earthquake survivors in Haiti. Ms. Fox's class, room B5, helped organize the fundraiser.

"Coins for Haiti" was a competition amongst all the classes in the school. The first and second place classrooms with the most money donated received treats donated by Keizer Roth's grocery store. All proceeds were given to the Red Cross. Our school raised a grand total of $655.87!

We would like to thank Keizer Roth's, SignWorks of Oregon, Bank of the Cascades in Keizer and all the generous students and families of Weddle Elementary!

Houck students get environmental by counting birds and planting gardens

Submitted by Simona Boucek on March 1, 2010 - 10:02am

Houck Middle School's environmental club is up and running and so far, the club has participated in the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) and planted a rain garden with Marion Soil and Water Conservation.

For the GBBC, students made flash cards of the most commonly sighted birds that winter in Salem and built some nesting boxes for smaller song birds that make their nests here in the area.

Marion Soil and Water Conservation District invited students to work with them on building a rain garden. Jenny Meisel, a Resource Conservationist, explained to our students that the rain garden would take rain from the roof and rain gutters of a house and then pipe that water into the specially designed garden where it would water the native plants students had planted. But more importantly it would then filter water that wasn’t used by the plants before it went into the city’s storm drains. More than 400 plants were planted in the rain garden.

Swegle coin drive helps Haiti

Swegle Elementary students and their families truly have a heart for helping others. At Swegle, the school ran a four day “Help for Haiti” coin drive. The coin drive was held the week prior to Super Bowl Sunday, and in order to provide some extra incentive, students were encouraged to drop their coins in one of two jars labeled with a Colts or a Saints helmet.

Sports enthusiast, Miss Emanuel, inspired the friendly competition with “touch downs” (large deposits) marked on the paper football field on the wall in the front lobby. Many students made “touch downs”: Luke Hildahl poured in the contents of his piggy bank; KayLynn Toney put in all $95 of her birthday money; Dylan Thomas contributed $10 of already rolled coins, and 5th grade teachers, Ms. Sexton, Mr. Ochoa, and Ms.Wilson brought their whole classes down to pour coins in the jars so that they overflowed.

The results of the “game”: The winners were the children of Haiti and Swegle, and the score: $614.31. A check was sent to UNICEF.

Roberts students partner with Willamette University to explore teaching as a career

Willamette Art and Literacy Interns (WALI) is a partnership between Willamette University’s Center for Excellence in Teaching (CET), Roberts High School and Lamb Elementary School. The WALI students are part of Roberts High School's new Tech Prep Academy. They meet with Willamette’s Masters in Teaching (MAT) students twice a month to learn reading strategies and gain valuable experience. The WALI students in turn meet with Lamb Elementary students once a week to read with younger students. The multi-level interaction benefits all involved.

WALI partnership with Willamette UniversityThe WALI program gives Tech Prep Academy students opportunities to explore teaching as a primary career choice while making a connection to arts and literacy. The program currently has ten students involved in the education career strand. On the Willamette University side of the partnership, WALI has seven MAT students involved. Their involvement helps give students a focus and see what some of the preparation for a career in education looks like.

In addition, Enterprise Car Rentals donates transportation to the WALI program. Each week, Enterprise donates a van and driver to transport the students to and from Lamb Elementary School. This donation to the program enables WALI students a safe and efficient way to travel to their site. Without this transportation valuable travel time on city buses would shorten the experience and give students less time in the classrooms assisting the younger students.
