North Salem High School Hall of Fame induction

North Salem High School inducted eight new members to its Hall of Fame on Friday, September 21, 2012. Inductees were introduced at the homecoming assembly and received their awards at a ceremony that followed in the media center.

The 2012 inductees are:

Athletics Category

  • 1997 Girls State Champions, Track and Field – Athletes Eryn Fordney, Angela Irish, Rachelle Paul, Sasha Spencer, and coaches Sandy Sexton, Jerry Vellutini and Dallas Dyer.
  • Jed Lowrie, Class of 2002 – Stanford graduate and Major League Baseball player for the Houston Astros.

Achievement Category

  • Mary Lou Zeek, Class of 1971 – Owner of Mary Lou Zeek Gallery, serves on the Salem Arts Commission and the Oregon Artist Foundation.
  • Audrey Luna, Class of 1996 – Soprano and rising opera star performing in the 2012-13 season at the Metropolitan Opera.

Service Category

  • Stewart Leek, Class of 1938 – Posthumous award to long time teacher and counselor at North Salem, and administrator at North, South, McNary and Sprague high schools.
  • Hollis Huntington, Faculty – Posthumous award to Salem High School PE teacher, football, baseball and basketball coach. His athletic teams won many titles, including basketball state championships in 1925, 1926, and 1933. Mr. Huntington was inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame in 1992. He is one of only three men to play every minute of three different Rose Bowl games.

Distinguished Lifetime Category

  • J. Warren Carkin, Class of 1940 – Architect whose firm designed the master plan for Chemeketa Community College, McKay High School, and remodels of the State Capitol, the founder of Leadership Salem, and Salem's First Citizen in 1980.
  • Bruce Michels, Class of 1954 – Founder of Remtek Corporation, producer of heat-shrinkable and electrical interconnection plastic devices, serves on the Board of Directors for the Chartwell School for dyslexic children.
