Citizen Budget Committee
Page updated October 20, 2009
The Citizen Budget Committee is made up of seven citizens, appointed by the school board, in addition to all the school board members. The committee is an advisory group established by statute. The group has several purposes. It conducts public meetings to hear the budget message and reviews the budget proposed by the superintendent.
One of its most important purposes is to listen to comments and questions from interested citizens. The committee considers this input as it deliberates on the budget. The committee can revise the proposed budget to reflect changes it wants to make in the district's fiscal policy. When the committee is satisfied, it recommends a budget to the school board for approval. The school board must approve a budget by June 30 of each year.
Budget Committee Meetings
Local budget law requires that the budget committee hold at least one meeting for the purpose of:
- Receiving the budget message and budget document from the Superintendent
- Providing community members with an opportunity to ask questions about and comment on the budget
The district gives prior public notice of the meeting(s) held for these two purposes. The budget message is usually delivered by the superintendent in mid-April, and the public hearings are scheduled for May.
Note: This committee meets as needed (no regularly scheduled meeting dates). For information on meeting dates, contact Wendy Akins @ 503-399-3036, or e-mail akins_wendy@salkeiz.k12.or.us.
